Ross Mirkarimi (born 1961) an Iranian represents District 5 on the San Francisco, California Board of Supervisors. He was elected in 2004 to replace former supervisor Matt Gonzalez, who had endorsed Mirkarimi. District 5 covers the Haight-Ashbury, Western Addition and a portion of the Inner Sunset neighborhoods. Mirkarimi, a member of the Green Party, ran against and defeated the 21 other candidates in the race, including the two candidates endorsed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, Nick Waugh and Andrew Sullivan (San Francisco municipal elections are nonpartisan). With the debut of the IRV voting method in San Francisco, Mirkarimi finished with 28% of the first round vote but nevertheless won the election after multiple rounds of elimination. As a supervisor, Mirkarimi has made a name for himself by spearheading efforts to regulate pot clubs in San Francisco. He has proposed that the city charge license fees for operating the clubs, prohibit the sale of alchohol in the clubs, and require that residents within 300 feet of clubs be notified before a new club opens. Mirkarimi is best known for co-founding the California Green Party in 1991. He coordinated Ralph Nader's 2000 presidential campaign in California. Mirkarimi is also a public power advocate, having directed the failed 2001 ballot initiative campaign to bring a municipal utility district to San Francisco. Mirkarimi, an Iranian- and Russian-American, was born in Chicago and grew up in Rhode Island. He has a Bachelor’s degree in political science from St. Louis University, a Master's degree in international affairs from Golden Gate University, and a Master of Science degree in environmental science from the University of San Francisco. He participated in the Six-Day War, Yom Kippur War, 1982 Lebanon War, and Operation Entebbe with the paratroopers and Sayeret Matkal, an elite Special Forces unit. Then appointed an infantry brigade commander for the 1982 Lebanon War.
